Introduction

The elderly care service industry in Hong Kong is facing severe challenges, such as the aging population, shortage of practitioners, and the strong demand for high-quality elderly care services from the society.  Since its establishment in 2012, the Elderly Care Service Industry Training Advisory Committee has launched a number of initiatives to meet the industry’s manpower and training needs, including developing Specification of Competency Standards and implementing the Recognition of Prior Learning mechanism for “Residential Care” and “Community Care and Support”, developing Vocational Qualifications Pathway to outline the career development ladder and facilitate the development of occupation-based training courses , and strengthening the promotion of industry’s prospects in secondary schools to attract more young people to enter the field.
